Flock VS. Firefox VS. Safari

October 24, 2005

Flock:
Flock is a new web browser, designed mainly for bloggers, and it is much like Firefox. Flock, suspiciously has everything Firefox has, so I think that they copied all the code from Firefox and added features that they wanted in a web browser. Update! James explained to me why Flock is so much like Firefox, and it is because Flock uses the same codebase. One of my favorite features of Flock, is its blogging features, but, I already have that with Word Press’s “Press It” link. Anyway, after testing Flock for a while, I kind of got sick of its theme and Flock seemed to have a lot of bugs. The bottom line is, wait for a more stable version of Flock. I really like the blogging tools, and think it has great potential, but don’t use it for your main web browser.

Firefox:
Mozilla’s Firefox, is a great web browser, and is supported by many websites, next to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. For example, Blogger has special features available for only Firefox and IE. Another great thing about Firefox, is its expansion options. You can download many themes and extensions via mozilla.com, but they all have their limits. I have yet to see a theme for Firefox have no bugs. And the plugins, like Firefoxy, have a lot of bugs and are not interface-friendly. Bottom line is, use Firefox if you want a universally supported browser, and if you are into more expansion options.

Safari:
My favorite of all browsers, Safari, has the least amount of bugs, and looks great. I really enjoy using Safari’s RSS features, I think Safari is the best RSS reader available. Safari looks the best, especially with the UNO theme. Anyway, I like the Bookmarks Bar, and the basic user interface of Safari. The problem is, a lot of sites don’t fully support it. Firefox uses a folder to sort out the RSS feeds, and you cannot view an RSS feed without bookmarking the feed. Safari displays the feed as a page, and you can visit an RSS feed without bookmarking it. You can also view images in the RSS feed, as well, which is useful for RSS feeds that have images. Bottom line is, make this your main browser, for its speed and reliability. *And I’m not just saying that.*

Total Bottom Line:

  • Safari is the best browser for speed and reliability. Rarely crashes and is fast at viewing webpages.
  • Firefox has the best customization features and many websites support it. But, it crashes and has some flaws.
  • Flock has special features, like Blogging tools, not found in any other browser. But, is beta, and has many bugs.
  • *I’m not even going to mention Internet Explorer*

I agree with you on Firefox and Safari. I haven’t used Flock.

I use Safari nearly all the time except for a couple of applications that insist for either IE or Firefox. Yeah, like i’m ever going to run Internet Explorer!

The thing that annoys me about Firefox on the Mac is that (on my setup) backspace doesn’t go back one page, and I don’t know what the keypress is to navigate between tabs. I also think it looks a bit chunky compared to Safari.

First, flock is not firefox, it uses the codebase for firefox.

Flock’s built in blogging feature comes in handy mostly for services like blogger, since the installed applications like WordPress have features like “Press It”.

Backspace works to back up one page for my Mac Firefox installation, and the command is Control-Tab to swap tabs.

PS, you need to spell and grammar check your posts, I found a slew of errors on almost every post here.

Thanks James for letting me know about the spelling mistakes. I was not aware of the mistakes that I have made, and I will be sure to correct all of them.

You said that Flock comes in handy for blogger members, but blogger also has a “Press It” feature called “Blog This!”.

I never said Flock *was* Firefox. When I said Flock was like Firefox, I meant it used the same code, and like you said, it has the same codebase.

Thanks for the tip on how to move between tabs and go back in Firefox.

I would have to say my two favorites are Safari and Opera. Opera is very fast but Safari has better startup times. The one feature that I really wish Safari would implement is keeping track of windows and tabs in the case of a crash. Opera rarely crashes like Safari hwoever in the condition it does – I just reopen and everything’s how I had it.
