Earlier we speculated that Apple was developing a new Mac for education-purposes only. Today Apple announced a new $899 iMac with 1.83GHz Core-Duo processor, 512MB of RAM, 80GB hard drive, Intel GMA 950 graphics with 64MB integrated graphics, and a combo drive. The $899 iMac is not packaged with an Apple remote, but Front Row can be accessed with the keyboard shortcuts.
This new $899 iMac is amazingly cheap for what you get, and I’m sure it will definitely increase Apple’s presence in the education market. It also makes the Mac Mini models look very overpriced, considering the Mini does not come with a screen, a keyboard or mouse, and the Mini has only a 1.66GHz Core Duo for $799 ($779 for education). Maybe we can expect a significant price drop on the Mini sometime soon. And maybe if this $899 iMac is a great success in the education market, Apple can also sell it to consumers who want a reliable, beautiful, inexpensive, all-in-one computer.
Two check out the new $899 iMac, visit the Apple Education Store and find your school.
