iWeb

January 10, 2006

I guess Apple did make a mistake last week when they leaked the term “iWeb”, and it wasn’t just a fake Photoshop job. iWeb is a blogging+web site+podcasting application that allows drag-and-drop media from all of the iLife applications. iWeb is much like Realmac Software’s RapidWeaver. RapidWeaver also had integration with iLife, but Apple takes the next step by integrating it with the new Garageband that has “Podcast Studio”. iWeb supports one-click uploading to .Mac and allows you to password-protect your site. It is not clear if you can upload to your own web-host via FTP, but Apple does say:

*iWeb publishing requires Internet and webserver access (.Mac recommended).

I’m not sure if this means that you can upload to sites not on .Mac, but Apple obviously doesn’t want to make it clear to the user.

I read that as meaning that they’d prefer you to use .Mac (of course) but that you can use your own host.

They’d be crazy not to let you use your own host – how could designers build sites for clients if they were tied into .Mac?

I have found out that you cannot upload via FTP, but you can save files and then upload with an FTP application.
